"American skier Kyle Smaine, 31, a former world champion halfpipe skier and professional skier, died in an avalanche at Mount Hakuba Norikura in Nagano, Japan on Sunday, January 29th. The death has been confirmed by the family and photographer Grant Gunderson of Mountain Gazette, who was on a work trip with the group of Austrian and American skiers that was hit by the avalanche.

Smaine was on a promotional trip to promote the 'Ikon Pass' - a travel pass belonging to American company Alterra Mountains Company - which gives the user access to various mountains in the United States, Japan, Canada, and Australia. The Japanese company Nagano Tourism was also responsible for the trip.

According to Gunderson, a skier from another group triggered the avalanche, burying Kyle and another man who also died, as well as professional skier Adam Ü, who spent 25 minutes under the snow but survived.

A group consisting of two Canadian mountain guides and 4 or 5 emergency doctors or nurses performed the rescue. The doctors did everything they could for Kyle and the other skier. 'We heard the crack. We realized, 'It's big.' We started running and we got hit,' Adam told Mountain Gazette.

Kyle won gold at the 2015 Freestyle and Snowboard World Championship. He retired from international competitions in 2018. The US embassy in Tokyo said it was 'aware of the incident in Nagano Prefecture and is in contact with relevant authorities to provide appropriate assistance.
